The ultimate science

What science explains the origin, operation and activity of the whole universe?

Not physics. It may explain why rain falls to the earth, the speed of light, and how to put a satellite into space, but it can’t explain the enduring love of a mother for her child.

Not chemistry. It may explain why fire burns wax, how to make plastic, and why baking powder makes biscuits rise. But it can’t explain the height and breadth of inspiration Beethoven felt while writing his grandest symphonies.

Not genetics. It may explain DNA but it can’t explain how prayer can restore health to a man born blind as Jesus Christ did.

Not evolution. It may trace how monkeys evolved into humans, but it can’t explain the origin of mind and intelligence to begin with.

Not the Big Bang. What caused the Bang?

No physical, material, biological or other atom-centered science can explain the wholeness of the universe from its own in-house limited matter-based perspective. A higher science is required, a divine Science.

Divine Science is knowledge of God and how God created and evolved the cosmos. It explains that we live in a universe of Mind, where cause and effect are mental, not physical. This Mind, or God, is omnipresent intelligence. It is self-existent, eternal, and infinite. It is the power that holds the universe together, is responsible for its origin, and inspires, supports and sustains all the expressions of love and life that happen within it.

Divine Science is the ultimate science. It is bigger than physics. Bigger than chemistry. Bigger that biology. It explains everything all at once, on the basis of omnipotent Mind, not elusive matter.

Divine Mind existed long before a Big Bang, if there ever was one. Mind is the source and creator of all.

Studied from a basis of Mind, rather than inert mindless matter, the universe begins to make sense. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, tells us all about it.

Spirit is the life, substance, and continuity of all things. We tread on forces. Withdraw them, and creation must collapse. Human knowledge calls them forces of matter; but divine Science declares that they belong wholly to divine Mind, are inherent in this Mind, and so restores them to their rightful home and classification.” Mary Baker Eddy

The universe is huge

Can the human mind fathom how big the universe is?

In an article titled, “Is there alien life?” published in the Washington Post National weekly, July 28, Edward Weiler, an astrobiologist, is quoted as saying, “We now know the number of stars in the universe is something like 1 followed by 23 zeros. Given that number, how arrogant to think ours is the only sun with a planet that supports life, and that it’s in the only solar system with intelligent life.”

Aside from his argument that it’s only a matter of time before intelligent life is discovered elsewhere than on earth, that number “1 followed by 23 zeros,” grabbed my attention.

How big is that number?

100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Can you count that high? Hmmm…may take a while…

In Christian Science, we talk about infinite Mind, unending ideas, untold riches, and other ways of describing bounty without limit, but do we really fathom the immense scope, breadth and width of what we speak?

The material so-called universe is but a miniscule glimpse of the divine universe that exists.

Divine Mind is infinite. No end, no boundaries, no ceilings, no stoppage, no lack….We live in this universe right now.

Similar to believing one lives on earth, and there is no intelligent life elsewhere in the universe, sometimes we believe we live in our own little orbit of existence, stuck with our own problems, and no help coming from elsewhere. But this isn't true. We live in a universe of Life that is brimming with helpful ideas and healing solutions coming at us from all directions. We need only listen and welcome them in.

Next time you hear the suggestion, “I don’t have enough. I lack. I can’t do it. I’m at the end of my rope. There is no solution. It’s hopeless…” remember how big divine Love’s universe is that you live in.

For every star, there’s a healing idea. And it is shining it's light on the path before you.

Over time, scientists will likely discover even more stars than “1 followed by 23 zeros,” because they have only begun to discover the huge cosmos that exists in the realm of Mind we live in.

You and I have barely begun to discover the rich bounty of ideas divine Mind offers to enrich and strengthen our lives. There is no end to the good we have to experience. It's ongoing and forever...

Enjoy the stars!

God vs. science

When I saw the recent issue of Time magazine with the cover “God vs. Science,” I thought, “Oh, no, not another God-science debate!”

I’ve grown tired of reading these types of articles, which have appeared frequently in leading periodicals over recent years, because they almost always start from the same erroneous premise—that the universe is material and all logical reasoning, so the argument goes, has to start with what appears to be materially real.

This article indeed is a debate between Richard Dawkins, an Oxford professor and staunch materialist, and Francis Collins, the genome pioneer who believes in God, but holds a very materialistic view of creation. Collins tries to reason with Dawkins that a God exists, but reasoning out from matter, has little proof of God to offer other than “I believe…even though I can’t prove it in the lab.” Faith is essential to worshipping God, but sound scientific conclusions can derived too from a spiritual basis of reasoning.

I am so grateful for Christian Science when it comes to explaining the origin and substance of the universe.

For me, answering the question, “Where did the universe come from?” starts the debate correctly.

Matter is mindless. Particles, electrons, energy-fields and dirt have no intelligence. There is no mind in them. They cannot think, plan, reason or devise. They are void of mind-power.

Believing the universe evolved from a big bang, from primordial chaos, or some similar matter-theory is like believing a tornado could rip through a junkyard and produce an IBM supercomputer on the other side. It isn’t going to happen. Chaos doesn’t produce order. Mindlessness does not create mindfulness. There has to be an intelligent power behind all creation, and it cannot be material. It is spiritual!

God is Spirit, and Spirit evolves spiritual ideas.

We live in a universe of Mind where all is idea. Things are thoughts and ideas are substance. Understanding the cosmos is a matter of perspective.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote,
"To mortal mind, the universe is liquid, solid, and aeriform. Spiritually interpreted, rocks and mountains stand for solid and grand ideas." Science and Health
"What is the thought behind the thing," is perhaps a more constructive question to ask when trying to understand reality.

To understand the universe, we have to reason out from Spirit.
"The true theory of the universe, including man, is not in material history but in spiritual development. Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal." Science and Health
The God-science debate will continue until humanity understands the allness of God, the infinitude of Spirit, and the might and majesty of Mind. This understanding is destined to come more fully over time for it is the truth.

Until then, I will simply continue to demonstrate the presence and power of God in my own life, and let my example speak for itself.

I look forward to the day when Time magazine has a cover feature titled, "God vs. science debate ended. God is All!"

Or perhaps, you can think of an even better title??...

How big is your God? Part I

I grew up on a farm in a rural community in the SE corner of Washington State. Trips to big cities were very exciting for me as a youngster. The vast urban sprawl, gargantuan shopping centers, towering skyscrapers, people and cars like ants everywhere jolted my small-town concept of life. They told me there was a whole lot more to this world than what I had seen from the vistas of our apple orchard. Imagine that!

Since then, I’ve been out in that world and explored a bit of its diversity. The sights to see, people to meet, and places to go are immense indeed, far more than I could ever hope to take in over a few decades.

I haven't been able to determine the source of the below pictures, but a reader sent them to me to illustrate how much bigger the universe is than we typically realize.

Here's a picture of earth relative to a few sister planets.

Posted by Picasa If you think earth is very large, though, you have a lot to learn. Take a look at the next posting for an eye-opener...

How big is your God? Part II

This continues from the posting above.

Look how small earth is compared to Jupiter.

But the sun is thousands of times bigger than the earth...or is it millions??

And Arcturus is thousands of times bigger than our sun...

Earth is invisible at the above scale.

And Antares is thousands of times larger than Arcturus...

After seeing how puny the earth is relative to other suns and planets elsewhere, I wondered about my concept of God. Is my concept of God earth-sized when it should be Antares sized? Or even bigger???

God is infinite.

Infinite is pretty big…bigger than big. It’s not a material quantity, it’s an infinite Mind. There are no limits, no boundaries, no temporal outlines and finite measurements to it. God is everywhere, everyplace, at all times and in all ways. There is none else. There is none other.

That’s pretty big!

Is your God that big?
