Healthcare reform and prayer treatment

There was an interesting article printed in the Los Angeles Times today that highlights a wrestling in our society over the merits, value and legitimacy of treatment for health problems through prayer.

Three prominent senators inserted a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill that would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses. I'll let you read the article yourself about the debate surrounding this provision.

In my own prayers, I pray that our country more largely recognizes the benefit of prayer. The present healthcare crisis is not primarily a financial one, but a moral and spiritual one. Our present system is crying out for a moral and spiritual overhaul that elevates the kind of healthcare people receive. And spiritual treatment is a viable and proven form of care.

Health is more than a medically manicured body. It involves living a spiritually responsible life, which spiritual treatment can help people find.

Millions of prayer-motivated people have proven the benefit of prayer to meet health needs over the centuries. We may all have plenty to learn about how to meet all health needs consistently and constantly solely through prayer, but the success to date and the benefits already garnered merit continued support of prayer-based treatment.

It certainly is monumentally less expensive than conventional medical care.

If everyone sincerely turned to God first before racing to the doctor or to the emergency room when a trouble developed, there would be far less visits to medical facilities and far fewer burdensome medical bills.

Prayer works. It heals. It brings huge benefits to society.

The future of Christian Science treatment is in no way tied to the outcome of a healthcare bill in Congress, but it would benefit our population to recognize the benefits of prayer and use it more frequently for healthcare needs. A provision in the healthcare bill recognizing the value of spiritual treatment could be a step in that direction.

Daily maintenance of thought

This morning I reviewed some odd jobs that needed to be done around the house. The pilot light in the fireplace won’t stay lit. There’s a growing crack in the tile of the dining room floor that needs to be repaired, and my wife needs some yard work done before winter sets in. There’s more…

Geez, I protested. Keeping up a house is a never-ending maintenance project!

As a rule, I don't let jobs accumulate. For the most part, I get them done promptly.

But, I momentarily mused, what if I ignored items needing attention and went on my merry way with only activities I wanted to do?

The answer was simple. The house would fall into a continuing state of disrepair until the number of tasks needing attention was large, the place would look grossly neglected and it would take a huge amount of work to get the premises back into shape. This was not a place I ever wanted to be!

Then I thought about the human mind and body it governs. It seems to be an on-going maintenance project too. If neglected and allowed to fall into a state of disrepair, a huge list of “to-do” items is eventually faced. As with the care of a house, it's better to stay on top of things from the beginning.

Christian Science teaches a unique form of maintenance for mind and body. As Jesus taught, it’s not through material ways and means that an ideal state is attained, but through increased spiritual understanding. The metaphysical “maintenance program,” if you will, of Christian Science, is spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life.

But this takes work! It requires prayer and study work!

Many people try to slide by for decades without putting in sufficient prayer time for proper spiritual maintenance of thought. And like a nice new house slowly falling into disrepair, the evidence of need may appear very slight at first. But if repeatedly ignored, eventually the list of to-do items becomes so large that major remedial action is needed to salvage the premises. It’s much easier to stay on top of the to-do list from the beginning and not be overwhelmed later on.

So, after that brief review of the value of on-going maintenance, I decided not to tire of keeping up our home. Be grateful you have it! I reminded myself. And show your appreciation by taking good care of it.

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” Jesus Christ

It would have happened anyway

One time I had a caller wondering if her prayer had done any good in bringing about a physical healing she experienced.

Because it took a while for the healing to occur, she pondered, “I wonder if the healing would have happened anyway whether I prayed or not.”

In a flash of inspiration, I replied, “Of course it would have happened. It’s God law that you be well and strong!”

Whoa…this was a new view I hadn’t seen so clearly before.

Many people don’t pray for healing, but get well anyway. And then they credit material reasons for the wellness, for example, by saying the body heals itself, or the ill would eventually go away anyway. But this is mistaken reasoning. Yes, it’s natural for the body to stay well. And yes, it’s expected that illness go away. But it’s not for material reasons. It’s for spiritual reasons!

God governs. God reigns supreme. There is a divine Mind controlling and governing every activity, function and aspect of our being as children of God. This divine Mind produces health and harmony in us, and no false belief of the human mind, including the belief of illness, can rob us of it. Jesus Christ proved it by restoring health to sick bodies with scientific surety, thus overriding the claim of evil that it could rob us of our God-given rights to well being.

So, yes, if we believed we were sick and felt like it, it would be natural and normal to return to wellness and for the sickness to disappear. There is nothing unusual about recovery at all. It would be expected. It’s God’s law in operation on our behalf.

It’s best to pray though, in all cases, because there are times when the belief of sickness seems to hang on longer and dig in its metaphorical heels. Prayer keeps our thought spiritually alert to healing truth so the error of belief can be mastered and not allowed to go as long as it would want to. Prayer is always the safest and wisest course to choose no matter what one thinks about disease “running its course.” Prayer puts a stop to it, shortens “the course,” eliminates the risk factor of what may or may not happen according to medical belief, and ensures a healthy outcome.

The future of healthcare

Healthcare insurance is a hot topic in Washington D. C. and throughout the chambers of Congress debating the issue. The estimated cost is astounding, at least one trillion dollars by conservative estimates.

As I prayed about the future of healthcare, it seemed to me that greater emphasis is needed on disease prevention. Presently, the primary focus is on dealing with effects of poor health through revised insurance programs and administrative procedures, rather than concentrating on the elimination of poor health in the first place.

What if those trillion dollars was focused on helping people stay healthy and keeping them out of health crises to begin with?

The United States spends the most money per citizen for healthcare than any other country, but does not have the healthiest citizens. Facts prove that spending more money is not the answer.

There’s need for a moral and spiritual revolution on the healthcare front that gets to the root of suffering and disease, rather than manipulating effects that continue to grow unchecked and increase expense.

Christian Science has much to contribute to sound healthcare for the population. The focus of attention in Christian Science is on improving one’s moral and spiritual position, reasoning, that as the quality of thought governing the body increases, the body feels an improved effect, and is healthier.

Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind…,” Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. What doctors diagnose in the body is but effect of opinions, beliefs and fears happening in human thought governing the body. If we want to improve the healthcare of our citizens, the health of people’s thinking needs to be addressed. Pocketbook issues are important, but focus on expense is not getting to the heart of what will improve the health of our citizens in the long run.

Health is spirituality expressed. It is morality, spirituality, and immortality understood, lived and demonstrated. Christian Science helps people think more spiritually, and gives them the spiritual tools they need to counteract suggestions of disease before they manifest physically, thus reducing visits to doctors and keeping medical expenses down.

For instance, many times over the years I’ve felt a cold or flu-like symptoms coming on, and I’ve reversed them by spiritualizing my thought. Instead of mentally submitting to a decree of days of suffering, I affirm my spiritual right to remain healthy and well, remembering that God sustains my health spiritually, and no material germ, bacteria or virus can take it away. Christian Science has saved me thousands of dollars in healthcare costs over the years by keeping me out of the hospital, and healthy at home. It can do the same for you.

Christian Science can work for anyone. It takes work, some prayer and effort to grow spiritually, but the investment is worth the reward. It certainly is a less expensive form of treatment than the ever-growing medical bills people face today.

More than new insurance programs, rules and policies, our country is crying out for a more effective path to health and healing. The present high cost of medical care is not a sign that we need more money to pay for it, but is a sign that the current medical model and approach is not working.

A spiritual approach to healing is a solution that will meet the need. It sounds radical to many people, but it works. A focus on increased morality and spiritual mindedness will keep people healthy and out of the emergency room. It not only eliminates poor lifestyle choices that cause outrageous medical bills, such as the effects endured from smoking, drinking, recreational drug use, obesity, and their kin, it also gives individuals spiritual truths they can use to counteract suggestions of other diseases before they grow out of control and cause expensive medical treatment.

One benefit that spiraling medical costs have created is discussion on options and alternatives. That is healthy. But I pray attention gets turned more in the direction of supporting a preventative program to health and healing instead of battling effects. Christian Science is the way to go.

Benefits of Christian Science healthcare

After a doubles tennis match I played last night, one of the players talked about a recent ordeal he and his wife had in dealing with their son’s fever. The baby’s temperature was running very high, and they gave him medicine to control the fever. The medicine didn’t work and the baby continued to suffer for another day or two. They asked their doctor what else to do and received a recommendation. The new medicine made things worse. And so the story went on… After a few days, the fever finally went away.

This is not the first time I’ve heard stories of parents struggling with medical prescriptions and what to do for their child. I do not judge their actions, for they do the best they know. But my heart does yearn for them to see the benefits of scientific prayer and accept the possibility of spiritual healing.

So many people, the majority I suppose, have been so strongly educated into believing healthcare solutions are medical solutions, that healing through prayer doesn’t even cross their mental radar screen.

Some will point to failure of prayer to bring relief in some cases, and use those examples as evidence against relying upon God for healing. But the evidence is strongly to the contrary. Prayer works. Prayer heals. Scientific prayer, as taught in Christian Science, relieves fevers, colds, ills, pains and troubles effectively, and without any of the frequently dark side effects that accompany the use of drugs.

I have seen this success in my own life. Raised in a Christian Science household, I went through childhood without taking drugs for childhood illnesses. Sicknesses were generally healed quickly through spiritual means and without prolonged suffering.

This quality of turning to God in anytime of need has stayed with me through the decades. My wife and I have taught it to our children, and they have been raised drug-free from day one. I consider this one of the most special gifts we can give to our loved ones. They know first hand the healing power of God and how to rely upon it. This will stay with them forever.

Christian Science works. It heals. It is the most powerful form of relief on earth today. Yes, it sometimes takes heavy doses of humility to hear the angel thought that brings healing. Not all problems seem as easy to heal as others. But this is nothing unusual. There are varying degrees of difficulty to all of life’s tasks and opportunities. Ask any doctor…

With the huge outcry of protest over the present sad state of our healthcare system in the US, it certainly is not too early for people to consider the positive aspects of healing through scientific prayer. Christian Science has something very special to offer parents, adults, and children everywhere. Spiritual healing is the cleanest, safest, and most sanitary form of healing there is. There are no negative side effects to its application, and the positive benefit is that the beneficiary is not only healed physically, they are also improved morally, emotionally and spiritually. Spiritual healing works from the inside out, bringing moral and spiritual regeneration along with physical restoration.

For some people, scientific prayer might seem like “hard work.” But it’s not. It’s natural and normal to turn to one’s Father-Mother for help and find the assistance needed. Many do it with their human parents all of the time. Why not try it with our divine Parent!

God’s love is the most powerful medicine there is. It heals.

Raising children and healthcare

Last weekend, when in Seattle, my 14 year old son woke me at 11 p.m. in our motel room and said, “Dad, I don’t feel very well.” I knew from experience, he wouldn’t ask for help unless the problem felt serious.

I spoke the spiritual truth to him as a reminder of who he was under God’s absolute government. He listened attentively.

As I gave him Christian Science treatment, though, doubts about his ability to recover quickly rushed in. After all, I remembered, he ate four lettuce leaves for dinner with a huge glass of strawberry lemonade. Then he swigged down a big bottle of Gatorade at the swim meet, plus Kettle Corn.

He deserved to suffer! Mortal mind protested.

Condemnation was a mental hurdle I had to jump and move past.

I condemned myself for letting him eat so poorly. That is not a general practice for our family, but somehow slipped through unnoted that evening.

So, to make spiritual progress, I protested back to the doubts of quick recovery.

“It doesn’t matter what he ate tonight.” I declared. “His ability to feel well is not controlled by what he consumes. It’s controlled by God, and God is caring for him as much now as at any other time. God did not keep track of what he ate.” I agreed.

I decided that God’s laws of Love could neutralize any so-called laws of physics that would warrant suffering. My son didn’t have to suffer. It was God’s will and plan for him to be well and stay well. This was a demonstrable truth.

I found my peace about his situation, knowing that divine Love was at work in his being sustaining him, protecting him, and healing him. He couldn’t help but get well and stay well.

If there was a need for diet adjustment in the future, God would facilitate it. But for now, quick recovery was the agenda.

After an urgent visit to the bathroom, which proved uneventful, he went back to bed. A few minutes later I heard him snoring. And that was the end of the suffering.

I’ve always been grateful for how quickly our children respond to Christian Science treatment. I can’t remember a single night over 17 years my wife or I have had to spend up with them because of illness. The ills have disappeared so rapidly when they were prayed for.

Christian Science is a marvel, a miracle, really, compared to other options in healthcare. To pray for a child, without having to apply any medicines and contend with side effects, and see them get well spiritually is truly a gift from God. Christian Science has been a huge blessing to my family.

A safer route to healing?

In the October 2006 issue of Readers Digest, the Health IQ section reported...

The Institute of Medicine looked at the prevalence of medication errors and found scary stuff:

  • The average hospital patient is the victim of about one medication error per day.
  • There are at least 1.5 million preventable adverse
    drug events each year.
  • Each harmful error adds $8,750 to the cost of your
    hospital stay.
Wow! Is this possible? Not too good of odds.

Sounds like its time for a safer healthcare program that eliminates the possibility of medication errors.

How about the medicine of Mind? It’s the remedy Jesus Christ used, and he was the most effective healer ever.

Christian Science asks:

Which was first, Mind or medicine? If Mind was first and self-existent, then Mind, not matter, must have been the first medicine. God being All-in-all, He made medicine; but that medicine was Mind. It could not have been matter, which departs from the nature and character of Mind, God. Mary Baker Eddy

The medicine of Mind can be taken whether in a hospital or not. It’s free for the asking, and there are no negative side effects. Could it be time for a change?

Medical mistakes run rampant

A new report states:

  • A hospitalized patient is subject to at least one medication error per day.
  • 1.5 million Americans are injured from medication mistakes every year.

No one is claiming health-care professionals are intentionally making these errors, but alarm bells are heralding a need for reform and fewer blunders.

Perhaps there’s a larger lesson to learn?

Is it time to value the merits of spiritual treatment where there is no opportunity for medication missteps?

Christian Science is the ultimate form of health-care. It doesn’t rely upon drugs. It doesn’t subject one to human opinion and medical guessing. It relies upon the infallible power of Mind to produce a cure, and it’s been proved by countless thousands over the last century to work.

Applying Christian Science is not as simple as popping a pill. It takes study, faith, prayer, commitment to Truth, and growing spiritual mindedness to obtain results. But most things worth having require work. That’s nothing new.

The long term benefit of practicing Christian Science include freedom from bondage to prescriptions, huge medical bills, focus on the body, and fear about health. Christian Science lifts thought to the higher realm of Spirit where Truth is the most powerful medicine and Mind the most effective physician.

Christian Science works. Give it a try.

Learn all about it in Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

You’ll never fear being victimized by a medical mistake again.

Buffett and Gates' money

Warren Buffett is donating $30 billion to a foundation run by Bill and Melinda Gates. It’s heartening to see the world’s two richest people joining forces to remedy some major world ills.

Much of the funding will be spent on health and education programs. Bill Gates is quoted in USA Today as saying, “There’s no reason we can’t cure the world’s 20 deadliest illnesses.”

I pray that Gates and Buffett understand it takes more than money and drugs to solve world health problems.

The US already has the highest spending per capita for healthcare and much sicker citizens then countries that spend far less per person. Billions of dollars have been spent on disease research over the last century, yet people face more severe and aggressive diseases than ever. One disease is conquered, and a worse one appears in its place. The evidence is unmistakable. It takes more than dollars and chemicals to stamp out disease.

Gates and Buffett are smart business leaders. I’m sure they have a plan in mind yet to be fully revealed. But whatever it is, to bear results that endure, their efforts needs to include an element of spirituality.

A drug may produce a short term effect, but for long term renewal people need improved values, increased morality and even spirituality. People act out and experience life according to the thoughts that govern their lives. The better their thoughts, the better their experience is, including their health.

The world’s 20 deadliest diseases are not going to be cured through monetary spending alone. Health is a state of Mind, the divine Mind expressed through us. The more we learn about this Mind-health relationship, the faster we’ll conquer disease and stay healthy.

American healthcare failing

Americans are sicker than the British despite twice the spending on healthcare in the USA as in Britain, a newly published study claims.

“Why isn’t the richest country in the world the healthiest country in the world?” study co-author Dr. Marmot asks.

Doctors and researchers are scrambling to account for the dramatic differences. “It’s a mystery,” some conclude.

No one has yet mentioned the most obvious explanation of all. And that is, increased spending on healthcare does not increase the overall health of our population. Conventional medical practices, which absorb by far the largest share of our healthcare expenditures, are not working.

Why the healthcare system in the US is failing is not a mystery. The US model is based on a premise that largely fails to account for the spiritual individuality of a patient.

People are not mindless robots. They are not mere chemicals and electrical charges. They are spiritual beings with a consciousness that governs their state of health. To improve the body, the mind governing the body needs to be improved. This is done through love, comfort, and understanding, medicine that does not come from a bottle, but from an understanding of God’s tender care for each of us.

Filling thought with truth and love will succeed where pumping bodies full of drugs fails.

It’s time to re-define healthcare from taking more drugs to spiritualizing consciousness. It doesn’t cost near as much to fund and the effect is far better.
