The healing power of forgiveness

There is no revenge so complete as forgiveness.
~ Josh Billings

We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate --- thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising.

~ Maya Angelou

Our capacity to make peace with another person and with the world depends very much on our capacity to make peace with ourselves.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Our anger and annoyance are more detrimental to us than the things themselves which anger or annoy us.

~ Marcus Aurelius

Forgiveness does not equal forgetting. It is about healing the memory of the harm, not erasing it.

~ Ken Hart

Love is an act of endless forgiveness.
~ Peter Ustinov

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

~ Jesus Christ

As I read these messages about forgiveness, I had a small epiphany. By feeling anger over past hurts and slights, we are identifying with our material self and feeling a false sense of powerlessness. In other words, we are not recognizing our oneness with God who is all power and all truth. In other words we are not recognizing our true identity as God's creation. We are acting as if we are separate and powerless. This is so enlightening. Thank you for these words of inspiration. Susan Crowe

Excellent observation! Yes, we don't have to suffer today from hurts of the past. We are not helpless victims. We can learn to love more and forgive. Let go of the resentment and possible desire for revenge, and just love. Love, love, love, is the royal way.
