This week’s Christian Science Bible lesson has a section on heredity. It explains that God’s preserving power is felt in understanding that we inherit only God’s goodness into our lives, and never disease, evil or mortal shortcomings.
I read the lesson real early in the morning before I did anything else, as I usually do, and before there was any stirring in the house. It truly was the beginning of my day. And I thought, “So, what did you inherit this morning that you are going to carry with you through the rest of the day?” And I asked, “Are you identifying only with God’s goodness, or are you inheriting in belief a bunch of problems from yesterday?”
Whoa…this was an eye opener to consider.
Every moment of our lives is a Spirit-moment. It’s not a matter-moment.
God is our Life, and God is good. We are spiritual beings living our eternal spiritual life now, and it’s overflowing with goodness, health, harmony and peace. As we identify ourselves correctly, we experience more and more of God’s goodness in every human activity and endeavor.
Consider your own position.
What did you claim as your inheritance this morning when you arose? Did you identify with a conflict you struggled with yesterday? Did you believe you had a health problem from time past? Did you accept that you lacked something important or significant? If so, you don’t have to, because you’ve never inherited anything less than good. Lack, illness, despair, fear, and their kin, are not yours to identify with or claim and they never have been. If you think they have been a part of you, then disinherit them pronto!
The errors of yesterday are not the truths of tomorrow. God made you spiritual and free of all evil throughout all time and eternity.
Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “In proportion to our understanding of Christian Science, we are freed from the belief of heredity, of mind in matter or animal magnetism; and we disarm sin of its imaginary power in proportion to our spiritual understanding of the status of immortal being.”
There’s the key to success, folks, understanding our “immortal being!” Our immortal being is fresh everyday. It’s new every moment. It’s clean, pure and disease free.
Now this is in inheritance I can get excited about claiming. And maybe you can too...

Genes controlled by belief
I came across one of my favorite news clippings today, lifted from the Christian Science Sentinel of January 6, 2003, which reprinted a newswire from the Canadian Press, titled “Perceptions, thoughts, beliefs more important than genes.”
It is a fascinating read...
Researcher says genes controlled by beliefs
“Forget the hype surrounding the Human Genome Project and start realizing that perceptions, thoughts, and beliefs have a bigger impact on people’s health than their genes, says a cellular biologist.
“Bruce Lipton is among a small but growing number of researchers who say people need to take responsibility for their environment instead of believing they are victims of their genes. Lipton, a former researcher at the Stanford University School of Medicine, now disagrees with the conventional belief that people are born with a set of genes that control their lives.
“Instead, he says genes adapt on an ongoing basis depending on the needs of cells as they respond to the environment. ‘Our perceptions turn on our genes and turn off our genes and our perceptions can rewrite our genes,’ he said….
“’As you change your perception, as you change your beliefs, you actually will change the biological activation in your own biology,’ Lipton said….”

Mary Baker Eddy had the above figured out over one hundred years ago when she wrote, “Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action…God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.”
Not DNA, genes, or chromosomes, have more control than the divine Maker.
Much research is happening today by scientists striving to trace troubles in people’s lives back to a DNA cause. Alcoholism, diseases, character traits, and more, many believe have a root cause in the genetic makeup of an individual. But eventually they will discover this is not true. What microscopes see in genes reflect what thought governing those genes believe. Change belief, and gene makeup changes. Lipton has confirmed this in his own studies, and others are discovering the same.
The better place to focus attention is on the spiritual truth about creation according to divine design. As we discover ourselves in God’s image, created with a perfect blueprint, that discovery will improve the human mind, which in turn improves the human body which is governed by that mind.
We are not helpless victims of mindless genes. We are spiritual creations of an intelligent creator. Through spiritual sense we discover this to be true.

No evil heredity
I was listening to a Christian Science lecture given by Ginny Leudeman, and she made the most ear-catching summary of how to think about DNA.
She was relaying how her dad was an alcoholic, and when she grew up she had to pray assiduously to break away from the belief that she had to suffer from problems her dad suffered from, including undesirable characteristics passed on to her through DNA.
When she discovered Christian Science, she began to see that bad habits are not passed on from mortals to their ancestors, except in belief. Through understanding God to be the Father-Mother creator, we can exempt ourselves from harmful hereditary beliefs and realize that DNA is shorthand for Does Not Apply!
Kind of catchy, I thought. I certainly won’t forget it.
God makes us who we are, not mortal ancestors, genes or chromosomes.
